1-ply vs. 2-ply Toilet Paper – What’s the difference?
Jul 27, 2009

Who Am I? 1-ply or 2-ply?
When you look at a toilet paper holder, its pretty easy to tell at first glance whether you’ll be enjoying the comforting benefits of 2 ply toilet paper or whether you’ll be roughing it with 2-ply’s distant cousin, 1 ply. Most people prefer 2-ply, but what gives it that softer feel?
1 Layer vs. 2 Layers
Simply put, 1 ply toilet paper is made of a single layer of paper, while 2 ply has two layers. In the past, 2-ply toilet tissue was always thicker and usually assumed to be better. However, thanks to today’s technological innovations and product advances, now TP can be made of only 1 layer of paper, yet may still be thicker and stronger than 2 layers.
Price & Usage
Cost wise, 1-ply generally tends to run cheaper than 2-ply (less paper layers = less costs). In terms of usage, people use relatively the same amount of sheets regardless of which version of toilet tissue they are using. Since they are then actually using less paper when it’s 1 ply, it’s cheaper to use.

Practically speaking, I prefer the 2ply toilet paper. It’s the same as 1ply toilet paper but the quantity is different.
Thanks for your input Henry!
Just ran across your website, and I love it. How fun! I myself am actually a 1-ply kinda guy. Being a plumber by trade, I deal with enough 2-ply disasters, so to speak. I go for the thicker 1-ply, and I have never felt like I was roughing it. Thanks for the informational yet entertaining website.
Hah, myself im a 2 layers guy. I cant stand 1 layer..
I think it depends on the quality toilet paper. Some 1-ply toilet paper is as absorbent as 2-ply.
[...] Magazine ran a battery of tests on 22 different brands and compared the top performers for 1-ply, 2-ply, and 3-ply toilet paper on everything from strength to dissolvability. Below are the results – [...]
I don’t think about the difference, I think about comfortably, like many other customers
i like 2 ply,more confortable
I would definitely go for 2 ply–it saves you from quite a mess if you have little kids.
From a plumber’s perspective, 1 ply is better on your plumbing – especially if have kids. You’ll avoid plumbing issues and the expense of a clogged toilet.
Thanks for your professional opinion!
Honestly, I don’t care if it’s 1 or 2 ply, as long as it doesn’t hurt my delicate parts while used I’m up for whatever! I’d prefer to get 1-ply since it’s cheaper and uses less paper, but if it’s very uncomfortable or chaffs then that is no bueno!
