Cuban retirees use toilet paper shortage as lucrative business opportunity

Cuban retirees are selling copies of Cuban Newspapers, such as Gramma, to deal with the toilet paper shortage and make some profit for themselves

By now most of us are probably aware of the dreaded toilet paper shortage facing Cuba.  (For those that aren’t – Cuban officials announced last month due to tough economic times and three successive hurricanes that plagued the communist country last year, they may experience a shortage by year’s end.)

While a truly awful situation, one Havana retiree claims the shortage has created a lucrative business opportunity for Cuban senior citizens.  The retiree, speaking anonymously for fear of getting caught, says he and other seniors are currently buying and reselling newspapers as an alternative to toilet paper.

The process works like this – before dawn, they line to purchase surplus newspaper for 20 Cuban cents (.007 USD) from factories/offices that were forced to close due to the ailing economy. They then turn around and resell the paper to friends and neighbors for 20 Cuban pesos (.71 USD).

While one Cuban official has said the government will import enough TP by years end to alleviate the shortage, I credit the seniors for their entrepreneurship.

Practically the best invention known to mankind

Practically the best invention known to mankind

Just when I thought colored toilet paper was dead, The Glow Company has restored my faith there are people in the world who love and care about toilet paper as much as the staff at does.  The Glow Company, a British firm, recently released their new product, “GlowRoll”, which is glow in the dark toilet paper!

This is truly a great, innovative product.  It may be one small product for man, but one huge advancement for mankind! I am jealous didn’t think of this stuff first!  Besides the obvious reason glow in the dark toilet paper is just plain awesome, it has many practical uses as well.  GlowRoll would be convenient for finding your way around a bathroom at night (the product website claims its capable of lighting up an entire bathroom!), camping in the wilderness, or even during power outages.

At around  £5 ($10 USD) a roll, this is definitely not something we would put in our bathrooms on a daily basis, but reserve for using during special occasions or giving as gifts.  Need a wedding gift? I’m sure the bride & groom would be thrilled to get a case of this stuff!

Kudos to The Glow Company for this noteworthy invention!

When you’re not looking for glow in the dark rolls of toilet paper, be sure to visit for low, wholesale prices and FREE SHIPPING on orders over $75.

How to Prevent Swine Flu during Back to School Season

Aug 18, 2009

Keep your kids smiling all year round with these flu safety tips!

Keep your kids smiling all year round with these flu safety tips!

Kids (and parents!) have one more reason to dread going back to school this year – fear of contradicting the dreaded swine flu (H1N1) virus, especially given the fact the highest number of swine flu cases occurred in those between the ages of 5-24. Luckily, since schools broke for the summer last May, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has learned much more about the H1N1 virus and has published a new list of precautions that if followed, will significantly reduce the chances of another outbreak from occurring and will also keep students (and teachers) safely in the classroom. Follow the steps below to ensure a healthy and happy school year for all:

Stay home for at least 24 hours even after flu-like symptoms disappear
Once the symptoms of the flu disappear (fever, nausea, etc.) remain home for at least an additional 24-hours. Just because you feel 100%, doesn’t mean the flu has disappeared 100% from your body. Give it an extra 24 hours to be safe. Additionally, children under 5 years old and children in high-risk, high-contact facilities (daycare or childcare) should give themselves additional time to fully recover.

Practice good hand hygiene
The quickest and fastest way to spread the flu is through hand contact. Wash hands with soap & water for AT LEAST 20 SECONDS; especially every time you cough or sneeze. Teach your children to sing “Happy Birthday” to themselves twice when washing their hands as a good rule of thumb for a 20-second time frame.

Use Alcohol-based Hand sanitizers
The best hand cleaners are alcohol-based and contain at least 60% alcohol, such as Clorox Instant Hand Sanitizer.  If the school’s policies do not allow alcohol based hand cleaners, alternative sanitizers should still be used, such as Care Wipes Alcohol-Free Wipes, however they will not be as effective.

Wipe ALL surfaces with disinfectants
Keyboards, doorknobs, and table tops are just a few of the most common places the flu virus can be spread from if touched. Therefore, these surfaces should be disinfected routinely. Try Clorox Disinfecting Wipes to easily tackle this important task.

An Impressive Toilet Paper Prank

Aug 11, 2009

And you though you'd seen it all!

And you though you'd seen it all!

Over the years, we’ve seen some pretty interesting toilet paper pranks on both a small & a large scale. While we don’t condone the unnecessary use of paper products (C’mon people, go green!), this toilet paper prank caught our attention!

A resident on Maplefield Road in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan, was the victim to this intense TP’ing prank!  By the looks of the pictures, this was no small feat – hundred of rolls of toilet paper must have been used and countless hours must have been spent doing the dirty work.  We can’t even see the house through all of the TP!

No word on who is responsible for this prank, but if was pulled off by a friend of the owner, I’d hate to see the owner’s enemies!

Toilet Paper of the Future

Aug 3, 2009

futureoftoiletpaperLooking back into the dark ages, toilet paper has come a long way.  However,  despite some minor changes and product advancements, it thankfully hasn’t changed much over the years.  Sure, Quilted Northern now markets a 3-ply roll and colored toilet paper is rare to come by, but overall, our trusted friend is still the same – soft, square sheets on a roll.

What do you think toilet paper of the future will look like?  Square bunches? Hard and scratchy?

Jeeze, we hope not.  To all those that say change is good – think again on your next trip to the John,
