Q&A with Toilet Paper King, Kenn Fischburg, author of the Toilet Paper Encyclopedia on moist toilet paper vs. toilet paper.

Lately, there has been a lot of discussion over the benefits of moist wipes vs toilet paper. One study has shown that some moist wipes may cause an allergic reaction, but many people find that they enjoy the convenience and added sanitation of moist toilet paper.

We sat down with the Toilet Paper King Kenn Fischburg, author of the Toilet Paper Encyclopedia for a little Q & A on the subject.

Q. Do you prefer moist wipes over traditional toilet paper as a part of your bathroom routine?

A. Yes, if the situation calls for it. Moist wipes will do the best cleaning for sure. But in the end the regular tissue leaves my skin dry and comfortable. For very sanitary minded individuals using both is the best. You just need to spend a little more time. (In my interview with Howard Stern about this subject he was enthusiastic about utilizing moist wipes as part of the final cleansing procedure).

Q. Do you only use either toilet paper or moist wipes alone, or do you always use both together?

A. The moist wipes are great on their own but I prefer using them with regular dry tp to finish the procedure.

Q. Why is there discussion over moist wipes vs. toilet paper?

A. The question of which tp is preferred helps me understand customer needs. It is common for users to try to save money but when it comes to this subject money is not the issue. The best tp may be only pennies more per application and is well worth the extra small cost. Adding high quality premium moist wipes into the equation is like having dessert.

Q. Does this ever come up in everyday conversation?

A. The subject can be entertaining and informative. It can also be intimidating for some to speak about. Because I am known for my expertise in this area I am often drawn into this type of discussion. I try to avoid uncomfortable conversations with customers and business people unless they are in the industry.

Here is another example of using toilet paper rolls as art. Artist Yuken Teruya uses cardboard toilet paper tubes as the basis for a cut out of a tree, as though the tree is springing into life from the toilet paper roll itself.
Kleenex brand facial tissues is now a recognized brand name for facial tissues, now synonymous with facial tissues! The history of the brand strategy behind Kleenex.

Kleenex brand facial tissues is now a recognized brand name for facial tissues. The name Kleenex alone is synonymous with facial tissues! But Kleenex facial tissues were almost never recognized for their use as disposable handkerchiefs. The story behind Kleenex facial tissues began in 1924, when the tissues were first marketed for using to remove cold cream from the face.

Advertisements were featured in magazines such as Ladies Home Journal, McCall’s, Good Housekeeping, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Cosmopolitan and Redbook stating that Kleenex facial tissues were celebrities’ beauty secret.

A researcher at the Kimberly-Clark company was responsible for the idea to market Kleenex tissues as a disposable and soft handkerchief. He convinced the advertising sales department that Kleenex facial tissues could also be used in place of cloth handkerchiefs, and they began running ads focused on this purpose.

Kleenex sales flourished after that! Thus, the historic brand name became a beloved household and bathroom product.

Happy April Fools Day to all Toilet Paper Blog Readers!

Just wanted to share with you some funny April Fools online pranks. Traditionally, April Fools Day pranks have included toilet papering (or Tping) unsuspecting people’s houses.

In honor of this funny practical joke, FarmVille, the popular online Facebook game, implemented the option of toilet papering barns. A free roll of toilet paper was given to every farmer. Users can pull toilet paper pranks on their neighbors’ barns.

Some states classify toilet papering as illegal, but others do not penalize toilet papering pranks. If you are looking for a hilarious prank for April Fools Day without the legal risks, try toilet papering on FarmVille. Thanks to FarmVille Freak for the post and pictures!

Google is also known for their April Fools Day pranks, including Google TiSP (short for Toilet Internet Service Provider). Google TiSP was a google hoax, a fictitious free broadband internet service that people could install themselves, accessible by flushing a fiber optic cable down a toilet connected to the local sewage system.

Diagram of Google TiSP from the Installation Instructions

Larry Page was supposedly quoted in the official press release:

“We’ve got that whole organizing-the-world’s-information thing more or less under control,” said Google Co-founder and President Larry Page, a longtime supporter of so-called “dark porcelain” research and development. “What’s interesting, though, is how many different modalities there are for actually getting that information to you – not to mention from you.”

The Installation Instructions includes illustrated step by step instructions for self-installation, or offers professional installation service with free bathroom delivery. It even offered a TiSP Help Group for online help.

Whether you choose to pull an April Fools Day Prank online or not, I hope you enjoyed these funny pranks!

The results of the Cottonelle Roll Poll shows that 72% of Americans prefer to roll OVER while only 28% of Americans roll under. Toilet paper users who roll over are more likely to notice the direction the toilet paper is hanging, and have a higher rate of switching the toilet paper roll to their preferred method.

A related Cottonelle survey of 1,000 Americans, offered insight into toilet paper behavior. Some of the fun facts include:

Those who prefer hanging their toilet paper over are more likely to have flipped the direction of the roll at a friend’s home. 27 percent of “overs” admitted to this shocking bathroom behavior!

Those who prefer to roll over also seem to be more observant and neurotic about their toilet paper roll direction. For instance:

“Overs” are most likely to notice the direction the toilet paper is hanging (74 percent)

“Overs” are more likely to be annoyed when the roll is the “wrong way”, under instead of over (24 percent)
