Oscar Fashions Toilet Paper Dress Art

Jan 6, 2011

Recently, one of our readers sent us pictures of toilet paper dresses that she made. The series is called Oscar Fashions.

Liza Morado, the artist, made the first dress to enter a newspaper contest as a joke. The contest was originally to design a dress for someone to wear to the Academy Awards. So Morado created a toilet paper dress.

Though she didn’t win that contest, she began making more toilet paper dresses. They are not life-size, but rather small creations featured on 8 x 10 inch boards.

When asked what kind of toilet paper she liked to work with, Morado said,

I prefer a paper that’s not too puffy. It is easier to work with one ply rather than two ply.

Morado said that she the qualities that she looks for in toilet paper are good absorbency and softness all in one.

More of Morado’s work can be seen on her website.

World Toilet Day

Nov 19, 2010

Today is World Toilet Day!

You might be thankful for the invention of the toilet (Thanks to Sir John Harrington!). But did you know that 2.6 billion people (nearly half of the world’s population) don’t have access to toilets and proper sanitation. Lack of sanitation is the world’s biggest cause of infection!

So, don’t take your toilet for granted!

Want to help spread the word? Add a world toilet day bubble to your facebook picture or Twitter pic. Get them at the World Toilet Day site.

Kimberly Clark Jumbo Toilet Paper’s 25th Birthday

Nov 10, 2010

Today is the 25th birthday of the Kimberly Clark innovation, Jumbo Roll Tissue (JRT) Toilet Paper. This is significant because jumbo toilet paper has contributed to restroom culture, found in airports, restaurants, stadiums and movie theaters. These extra big rolls of toilet paper reduce the need for servicing bathrooms to replace supply.

When the jumbo-sized roll was first introduced in 1985, most public restrooms only offered single toilet paper rolls, similar to what people use at home. JRT changed all that by providing the equivalent in length of 10 standard toilet paper rolls in one giant roll.

To celebrate, Kimberly Clark unveiled a jumbo toilet paper cake at the ISSA/Interclean trade show in Orlando (shown left).

Quilted Northern Toilet Paper Deemed Unworthy of Trademark

Oct 13, 2010

A Chicago federal district court judge recently decided that Georgia-Pacific, that produces the Quilted Northern brand, could not trademark its quilted diamond design. The AM Law Litigation Daily reported on the issue.

The reason was that the diamond pattern was found to be a functional part of the product. According to Judge Kendall, “the degree to which Georgia-Pacific emphasized the utilitarian benefits of the quilted diamond design in its advertising” actually strengthened Kimberly-Clark‘s argument that the design was functional, and thus not suitable for trademark.

Kimberly-Clark uses a quilted diamond design in their Cottonelle Ultra, Scott Ultra, and Scott Extra Soft toilet paper brands.

Do you think that the quilted diamond is functional or aesthetic?

Public Restroom Signs and Access Restored

Sep 10, 2010

Ever have to go to the bathroom and can’t find a public restroom?

CapeCodOnline.com recently ran a story about how the Provincetown Art Association and Museum tried to discourage use of their public restrooms by removing town signage. Public works employees have restored the restroom signs.

After a summer resident was denied bathroom access, a complaint letter was sent to the town. The Water and Sewer board warned the museum that they were violating their sewer permit and to fix the problems.

Other Provincetown public restrooms are in town owned buildings. The museum’s executive director Chris McCarthy complained that a non-profit organization shouldn’t be included in the town’s public restroom system without funding assistance. He estimated that 8,000 people in the summer season came to the museum only to use the restrooms, costing $1,100 annually for maintenance and supplies.

If you need a public bathroom anywhere, check out the Charmin sponsored website SitorSquat.com. Should organizations like museums be mandated to provide public restroom access? Do you think the restroom signs should have been restored?

Q&A with The Toilet Paper King: Moist Wipes vs. Toilet Paper

Aug 30, 2010

Lately, there has been a lot of discussion over the benefits of moist wipes vs toilet paper. One study has shown that some moist wipes may cause an allergic reaction, but many people find that they enjoy the convenience and added sanitation of moist toilet paper.

We sat down with the Toilet Paper King Kenn Fischburg, author of the Toilet Paper Encyclopedia for a little Q & A on the subject.

Q. Do you prefer moist wipes over traditional toilet paper as a part of your bathroom routine?

A. Yes, if the situation calls for it. Moist wipes will do the best cleaning for sure. But in the end the regular tissue leaves my skin dry and comfortable. For very sanitary minded individuals using both is the best. You just need to spend a little more time. (In my interview with Howard Stern about this subject he was enthusiastic about utilizing moist wipes as part of the final cleansing procedure).

Q. Do you only use either toilet paper or moist wipes alone, or do you always use both together?

A. The moist wipes are great on their own but I prefer using them with regular dry tp to finish the procedure.

Q. Why is there discussion over moist wipes vs. toilet paper?

A. The question of which tp is preferred helps me understand customer needs. It is common for users to try to save money but when it comes to this subject money is not the issue. The best tp may be only pennies more per application and is well worth the extra small cost. Adding high quality premium moist wipes into the equation is like having dessert.

Q.  Does this ever come up in everyday conversation?

A. The subject can be entertaining and informative. It can also be intimidating for some to speak about. Because I am known for my expertise in this area I am often drawn into this type of discussion. I try to avoid uncomfortable conversations with customers and business people unless they are in the industry.

Recycled Toilet Paper Roll Art

Aug 3, 2010

Here is another example of using toilet paper rolls as art. Artist Yuken Teruya uses cardboard toilet paper tubes as the basis for a cut out of a tree, as though the tree is springing into life from the toilet paper roll itself. Intensely detailed branches carved into the cardboard give these sculptures an atmosphere of stillness and beauty.
