Article about testing green products vs. traditional- do they work? Recycled toilet paper is not as soft or strong, but does break down in your septic system.

Consumer Reports says testers have found lots of green products are duds, but a few are worth trying. “When it comes to green cleaners and paper products, our testers have found that quality varies a lot,” said Lisa Lee Freeman of Shop Smart.

Take dishwasher detergents: ”The best-performing ones usually have phosphates, which are bad for the environment,” said Freeman. But phosphate-free dishwasher detergents are not great cleaners. However, a few are worth trying, including ones from Biokleen, Ecover, and Method. Another plus, you don’t have to pay a premium for them.

Then there’s toilet paper; of the 16 products tested, most of the recycled toilet papers weren’t as tough or as soft as conventional ones.

“But we did find that recycled toilet paper broke down easily in our disintegration tests and that’s good for your septic systems and the environment,” said Freeman. Marcal Small Steps is a good green choice and it’s also less expensive than some big brand names, so it’ll save you some green at the store too.

(Marcal also makes Sunrise Toilet Paper, one of the top selling toilet paper products from ToiletPaperWorld.com)

Thanks to KGO-TV for the article.

So if any products claim they are recycled, or green, check the stats. If they don't meet the EPA guidelines, then you really aren't helping the environment.

Recycled, Green, Eco-Friendly- what does it all mean? With all of the “green” products flooding the market, it’s difficult for the average consumers to figure it all out.

Here’s the real facts- the EPA minimum guidelines for toilet paper are at least 20% recycled content and 20% post-consumer waste. Recycled content means it was recovered and is being used again. This can be before or after a consumer uses it. Post-consumer specifically means that this content has reached the marketplace and has been used by consumers. Many brands like Sunrise Toilet Paper by Marcal exceed these expectations- Sunrise toilet paper is made from 100% recycled content and 60% post-consumer.

(I know it’s funny to think of post-consumer content when it comes to toilet paper, but trust me, its not what you think. Any type of paper can be used.)

So if any products claim they are recycled, or green, check the stats. If they don’t meet the EPA guidelines, then you really aren’t helping the environment.

According to the Environmental Paper Network, half of the planet’s forests have already been burned or cleared and 80% of the forests that remain has been seriously degraded. Deforestation is a huge problem on our planet and helps to contribute to a wealth of other issues, including loss of animal habitat and erosion.

Already known for using high amounts of post consumer recycled content in its Sunrise toilet paper line, Marcal is committed to helping to reduce the impact of the 800 pounds of paper the average American uses per year. This reduction of paper could help to sustain better homes around the globe, with less of an impact on the forests our planet so desperately needs.

The new line of Marcal products, known as Small Steps, offer an alternative to papers made from virgin fibers. Instead, these are made from 100% recycled paper. According to the company website, Marcal uses recycled paper gathered from communities in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New England. Old magazines, junk mail, office paper and newspapers are turned into paper towels, toilet paper, tissues, and napkins in the brand new line. Plus the manufacturing process is free of chlorine bleach, dyes, and fragrances – making it safer for our planet and for those with allergies.

The best part: they’re just as strong, soft, and absorbent as other popular brands. No scratching, irritation, or thin construction. Just greener paper goods for you and your family.

Did you ever think that next to your copiers and printers you’d find a toilet paper machine? Thanks to Japanese ingenuity, a new machine is letting offices turn their paper waste into toilet paper as a better way to utilize resources and recycle paper.

Tokyo-based Nakabayashi offers everything from bookbinding services, child car seats and office products, but its newest venture into toilet paper has audiences around the world excited for this eco-friendly and resourceful TP maker.

So how does it work? Well, the toilet paper machine is able to produce two rolls per hour from around 1,800 sheets (or 7.2kg) of used A4-sized paper, which would have usually been just thrown away. Right now there are few details, but all we know is that it’s set to be released in August in Japan with a price tag of about $95,000.

So what do you think? Would you be willing to recycle those extra copies to fill your bathroom needs?

Until then, remember you can get all of your office’s toilet paper needs from ToiletPaperWorld.com.

Here are some fabulous tips on how to make your living habits just a little bit greener. Not only will these tips help you save the planet. They’ll also help you save some money too. Enjoy!

Break the bottled water habit and drink tap water instead. It’s estimated that families often spend hundreds of dollars a year on bottled water. Many, if not most, of these empty water bottles are destined to end up in a landfill. Making the move to drink tap water from a reusable bottle can help you save money and aid the environment.

Switch to paper towels made from recycled paper. Over 90% of American households use paper towels, creating over 3,000 tons of waste each day. Switching to recycled roll paper towels can help cut down on all this trash.

Buy produce from local farmers markets that use organic growing methods instead of reaching for a prepackaged serving at a grocery store. You’ll be supporting local business, saving money, and helping your family eat healthier – all in one simple action.
