Debby, from Georgia,recently submitted this picture of a paper towel dispenser with the Charmin Lady on it, asking what type of folded paper towel would fit in. Paper towels? Yes, paper towels were once part of the Charmin family of products! P&G eventually discontinued all the other Charmin products, including napkins and facial tissue.

The Charmin Lady was the original icon for the Charmin brand. The silhouette of the woman’s head was from a cameo pin. I found this ad on the Thirsty in Suburbia blog from circa 1952, which still had the Charmin Lady on the packaging.

At the time, toilet paper was being marketed to women, enticing them with feminine advertising. By avoiding the topic of the actual use of toilet paper, the Charmin Lady ad campaign succeeded in a time when competitors were marketing toilet paper as a medicinal product. The Charmin branding eventually evolved to include babies, the well-known Mr. Whipple, and the Charmin bears.

A Charmin toilet paper advertisement

Some people may find toilet paper a challenging topic to discuss. Toilet paper manufacturers have found different ways to frame their message about the quality of their toilet paper. Using brand names and spokespersons, like Mr. Whipple, is one way to attract consumers to buying toilet paper.

The Charmin toilet paper ad pictured here uses a metaphor for using the bathroom with a contractual agreement. A clever play on words may attract consumers who do not like the direct approach of talking about toilet paper.

Some people have found toilet paper commercials offensive, especially those discussing the problems of a toilet paper that sticks to users’ bottoms. It is an interesting challenge to discuss toilet paper on national television, without being accused of having a potty mouth.

As you can see in the graph below, user saw very little difference between Charmin Ultra Soft and Cottonelle toilet paper. The choice between them was very close.

Though Charmin won for softness, Cottonelle won for absorbency and strength. Overall, there was only 1 more vote for Charmin.

Is it me or is my toilet paper getting smaller?

You’re not going crazy and you’re hands aren’t getting any bigger.  One of closest companions is actually getting smaller.

Toilet paper was originally manufactured 4.5” wide by 4.5” long, which is relative to the average man’s hand size. The square makes it convenient to fold over a few times and still be acceptable for size/ sanitary coverage. Basically, the size was established because it worked – kind of like the 90-foot pitcher’s mound and the 10-foot basketball rim.

However, the size of toilet tissue has been reduced in the last decade as manufacturers try to trim costs by trimming sheet size.

Currently, most TP rolls are still 4.5” wide (or close too it at least), but have may contain much shorter sheets.  Typical sizes of popular brands include:
-    Kleenex Cottonelle; Standard :  4.5 x 4.0
-    Angel Soft; Standard: 4.5 x 4.0
-    Charmin Basic: 4.4 x 4.3
-    Quilted Northern: 4.5 x 4.05

If you’re missing your old friend, have no fear.  Two manufactures still produce 4.5x.4.5″ rolls of toilet paper:
-    Boardwalk Toilet Paper; 2-ply
-    Windsoft Recycled Toilet Paper ; 2-ply

**Product Update: As of November 1, 2009, Private Label brands Boardwalk and Windsoft Toilet Paper no longer produce sheets in 4.5″ x 4.5″ sizes. Both brands have reduced their sheet size to 4.5″ x 4.25″. Thank you to Phil for bringing this to our attention.**

Ann Kagawa Lee of Honolulu, Hawai; Contest Winner

The dress and headpiece were designed by Ann Kagawa Lee of Honolulu, Hawaii and are made only out of Charmin toilet paper, tape, and glue.   Ann was the grand prize winner of Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com‘s 5th Annual Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest and took home $1,000 for her extraordinary efforts.  Her piece is a blend of “Gone with the Wind” and Japanese origami themes.
