Wausau Toilet Paper Review

First, it was nice to see rolls that are 4.375 inches in length.  The standard used to be 4.5 x 4.5 inches but with the increased cost of paper and the push to be more environmentally responsible most companies have cut the rolls to 4 inches.   Wausau did cut the length, but not by much. The sheet sizes range from 3.75 to 4 inches in length, BUT they put 500 sheets per roll on the 2ply and 1000 sheets a roll on the 1ply.  It really looks like a nice full roll.  The Eco Soft Green Seal, Eco Soft and the Dubl Nature are 100% recycled content while the Dubl Soft premium tissue is a virgin product.

EcoSoft Green Seal – A recycled toilet paper that comes in 1 and 2 ply, embossed for softness and strength.  The embossing is especially noticeable in the 1 ply tissue; there are a lot of one ply papers out there that do not have this feature and they are too delicate.  This tissue is an economic and eco-friendly alternative to toilet paper made from 100% virgin pulp for home use or commercial institutions.

Eco Soft - Has the same features as the EcoSoft Green Seal and is available in 1 and 2 ply. This bathroom tissue is also a brighter white color, while the green seal is an off white color. A whiter toilet paper may be beneficial in commercial settings like restaurant bathrooms or hotels where the bright white color will lend a cleaner, fresher appearance.

Dubl Nature Green Seal-  Is a  “step up” from the EcoSoft lines in thickness and appearance but is only available in 2 ply.  It is softer and stronger than the EcoSoft 2 ply papers.  The flower embossed pattern adds a touch of class, which makes this toilet tissue a solid choice for offices and hotels/motels.

Dubl Soft – This is the premium 2 ply toilet tissue.  It is the softest toilet paper of the four lines, as well as the thickest.  It is comparable to other name brand luxury tissues and is perfect for more upscale settings like B&B’s or guest bathrooms.

The Pros and Cons of Brown Toilet Paper

Apr 9, 2012

Today we feature a guest post from Stephane Lopez on the new brown toilet paper.

One of the latest trends in consumer marketing is greener products that are better for the environment. Businesses use green or eco-friendly products in an attempt to improve their image, and consumers want to do their part in becoming more eco-conscious. But how will consumers respond to brown toilet paper?

What is Brown Toilet Paper?

Brown toilet paper is bathroom tissue made of 100 percent recycled materials. The manufacturing process reduces or eliminates the amount of bleach used to whiten the paper. Recycled toilet paper uses labels like “unbleached” or “chlorine-free.” Some producers use 100 percent post-consumer materials, such as office paper, which makes the toilet paper gray with darker speckles. To achieve a desirable brown or beige color, producers can use a percentage of recovered cardboard. To reduce the amount of waste even further, some companies are eliminating the use of cardboard tubes inside of the roll.

Benefits to the Consumer

Since the production cost of recycled bathroom tissue is lower, companies can reduce the price for customers. Consumers are more willing to purchase environmentally friendly products, and purchasing greener products gives them satisfaction. Many consumers would be happy to buy brown toilet paper, especially if it came at a reduced cost.

Benefits to the Environment

When comparing white and brown toilet paper, the environmental impacts are vastly diverse. Since brown toilet paper uses only recycled materials, there is no need to cut down more trees for production. By eliminating the use of chlorine and other bleaching agents, the production process consumes about 50 percent less energy than white toilet paper. Conventional toilet paper pollutes the waterways by producing harmful dioxins from bleach, dyes and fragrances. Some of the negative effects of dioxins include increased cancer risks and developmental problems. Brown toilet paper does not use such chemicals, so the water is safer for humans and the environment.

Downsides of Brown Toilet Paper

Some companies believe that consumers have a preference for white toilet paper because the color white is associated with cleanliness. Some consumers are concerned that recycled bathroom tissue will not be as soft as the plush, two-ply brands. Top producers have eliminated this concern by implementing recycled cardboard in their product to achieve a softer texture.

Will Brown Toilet Paper Sell to Modern Consumers?

Studies performed on consumers indicate that the majority would consider buying this type of product. The initial response is negative, but once consumers feel the softness, they are pleasantly surprised. Cascades’ opinion is that consumers are ready to switch to brown toilet paper. Consumers are accustomed to using brown napkins and paper towels, so toilet paper is the next logical step in eco-friendly practices.

No Toilet Paper? NJ toilet paper companies donate rolls to Newark city employees

Jul 28, 2010

What would you do if you had no toilet paper, at work?

Last week Newark Mayor Cory Booker announced budget cut backs on many things, including toilet paper for city employees! Two toilet paper companies based out of New Jersey, Marcal Manufacturing and justtoiletpaper.com, have stepped up to donate toilet paper rolls.

This Thursday, Marcal Manufacturing will pull up in front of City Hall in a tractor trailer and hand out 50,000 rolls of recycled toilet paper! The city employees must only present their city IDs to receive a free roll of bath tissue.

In an interview with NJ.com, Mark Polish, the head of justtoiletpaper.com said, “Isn’t it someone’s right to have toilet paper at work?” His company will set up a donation button on its online site. Customers will be able to to donate Santa Clause toilet paper to city employees with a click of the mouse. Polish said the paper will also help Newark have a clean, happy Christmas in July.

Has the economy affected your toilet paper budget?

The case for recycled toilet paper

Jul 16, 2010

Did you know that at least 400,000 trees would be saved if EVERY home in the U.S. replaced just one roll of toilet paper made from virgin pulp with one roll of toilet paper made from recycled paper? That can’t be much to ask, right?

Soft toilet paper is made from trees that are cut down, which also affects the forests and the entire surrounding environment and ecosystem. Using recycled toilet paper decreases the need for cutting down trees for this everyday household product.

Not all recycled toilet paper is made equal though, see the EPA guidelines for recycled toilet paper.

ConsumersReports.Org Tests Green Products

Mar 6, 2010

Consumer Reports says testers have found lots of green products are duds, but a few are worth trying. “When it comes to green cleaners and paper products, our testers have found that quality varies a lot,” said Lisa Lee Freeman of Shop Smart.

Take dishwasher detergents: ”The best-performing ones usually have phosphates, which are bad for the environment,” said Freeman. But phosphate-free dishwasher detergents are not great cleaners. However, a few are worth trying, including ones from Biokleen, Ecover, and Method. Another plus, you don’t have to pay a premium for them.

Then there’s toilet paper; of the 16 products tested, most of the recycled toilet papers weren’t as tough or as soft as conventional ones.

“But we did find that recycled toilet paper broke down easily in our disintegration tests and that’s good for your septic systems and the environment,” said Freeman. Marcal Small Steps is a good green choice and it’s also less expensive than some big brand names, so it’ll save you some green at the store too.

(Marcal also makes Sunrise Toilet Paper, one of the top selling toilet paper products from ToiletPaperWorld.com)
